Coach, Referee Exchange Blows at Youth Flag Football Game in Massachusetts
An argument over calls escalated into a physical altercation, witnessed by children and parents.
A youth flag football game in Massachusetts devolved into chaos last week when a referee and a coach engaged in a physical fight, prompting outrage from parents. The incident occurred during a game involving the Massachusetts Outlaws.
According to reports, the altercation began when the coach, whose name has not been publicly released, became frustrated with the calls made by referee Jeff Etienne. The coach reportedly confronted Etienne about a disputed play involving blitzes, which he believed were wrongly reversed.
Eyewitnesses told WCVB that the coach shouted in Etienne's face before the referee shoved him. The confrontation quickly escalated into a brawl, with both men exchanging blows before being separated by adult spectators. Several children were present and witnessed the fight.
"I was outraged. I was totally outraged. I said, 'what the heck is going on here?'" one grandparent, who wished to remain anonymous, told WCVB.
Etienne, who has two decades of experience officiating flag football, stated that he was defending himself but acknowledged he should have walked away from the situation. He reported that he and the coach spoke after the game and apologized to each other.
"It should never ever be that serious," Etienne said. "We're not playing for millions of dollars. We're not playing in the NFL. It's youth. At the end of the day, these kids are learning. They should have fun. Let's not make it about us."
The Massachusetts Outlaws organization released a statement condemning the incident, emphasizing that it does not represent the team's values. "This sort of situation should never happen in youth sports," the statement read. "Sometimes a negative situation arises in the heat of the moment in a game, and it overshadows many of the more positive moments and outcomes that come from youth sports."
The team added that both individuals involved are generally level-headed and strive to be positive influences. The incident occurred during the Ghost Town Showdown tournament, which features girls' divisions ranging from 6u to 18u in Revere, Massachusetts.
