Cleveland Guardians' World Series Drought Continues After Loss to Tampa Bay Rays
The Guardians fell 7-3 to the Rays in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, extending their championship drought to over 75 years.
For yet another season, Cleveland baseball fans will have to wait.
The city's major league franchise has not won a World Series since 1948, a drought that continued Monday night after a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series.
The Rays will advance to the Fall Classic to face the Milwaukee Brewers, marking the first World Series since 1980 between teams seeking their inaugural championship.
José Ramírez and the Guardians were unable to overcome a three-game losing streak after initially leading the best-of-seven ALCS by winning two of the first three games. Tampa Bay's success was attributed to its superior starting rotation, bullpen, and late-series offense.
As the series progressed, the Rays adapted to Cleveland's pitching. After striking out 27 batters over the first three games, the Guardians' staff managed only one strikeout on Monday until Daniel Espino fanned Victor Mesa Jr. in the fifth inning. By that point, Tampa Bay had established a 3-0 lead.
Cleveland, which led the American League with 41 comeback victories during the regular season, appeared to fatigue. The team did not hold a lead over the final 25 innings of the series.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt questioned whether starting pitcher Gavin Williams, who had secured a victory in Game 3 on three days' rest, could have been a better option for Game 6. Instead, Vogt utilized eight relief pitchers, but the Rays capitalized on opportunities.
Tampa Bay's offense extended its lead when Junior Caminero hit a two-run home run off Cleveland's top reliever, All-Star closer Cade Smith, in the seventh inning, making the score 5-1. Yandy Díaz later added a two-run homer in the eighth off Hunter Gaddis, bringing the score to 7-3.
The Guardians had advanced to the World Series four times since their last championship in 1948, most recently winning the AL Central and defeating the Chicago White Sox in the Division Series by winning three consecutive games.
