Caitlin Clark recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists as the U.S. women's basketball team opened the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup with a decisive 94-61 victory over China. Clark, making her senior international debut alongside teammate Paige Bueckers, played a team-high 25 minutes off the bench.
Team USA showcased its dominance from the start, with Rhyne Howard also contributing 14 points. Bueckers added 14 points on efficient 6-of-9 shooting, despite picking up two early fouls. Coach Kara Lawson utilized her entire roster, ensuring all players saw court time.
This matchup echoed the 2022 gold-medal game, where the U.S. also defeated China. Despite China's significant height advantage with players Han Xu (6-foot-11) and Zhang Ziyu (7-foot-3), Team USA's defense proved effective. The team tallied nine steals and six blocks, limiting China to 32% shooting from the field and 26% from beyond the arc. Napheesa Collier, Angel Reese, and Breanna Stewart were noted for their defensive efforts, particularly in the paint.
Reese led Team USA in rebounds with nine off the bench, while Stewart contributed seven points and seven rebounds. Jackie Young added 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
Team USA will face Italy next on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET.
