WNBA stars Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers engaged in a heated on-court exchange Thursday night as the Indiana Fever faced the Wings. With less than 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Bueckers appeared to deliberately grab Clark's arm in an attempt to stop play and draw a foul.
Clark reacted immediately to the physical play, lashing out at Bueckers before throwing the ball down the court, which flew near her rival's head. Bueckers then gestured towards Clark, appearing to motion for her to calm down. The interaction was the latest chapter in the rivalry between the two players, which dates back to their college careers.
The Wings ultimately secured a 91-85 victory over the Fever, ending the Fever's unbeaten streak. Bueckers recently spoke about their dynamic, admitting on a podcast that she felt a sense of jealousy and envy regarding Clark's rapid rise to fame while she was sidelined with a knee injury at UConn. She expressed frustration, questioning "What about me?" during that period.
Despite their on-court clashes, Clark and Bueckers are scheduled to team up for the U.S. national team at the upcoming FIBA World Cup.
Separately, Clark and the Fever have drawn attention from some fans for not placing their hands over their hearts during the national anthem. Footage circulating online before their game against the Atlanta Dream showed Sophie Cunningham as the only Fever player to perform the gesture. Clark was seen with her hands behind her back during "The Star-Spangled Banner." Cunningham later drew praise from fans, with one calling her a "patriot," a sentiment Clark appeared to echo in a social media reply. The Indiana Fever went on to win that game against the Dream, 95-91 in overtime, with Clark scoring 26 points.
