CJ Gardner-Johnson Suspended One Game by NFL for Spitting Incident

The National Football League has suspended Buffalo Bills safety CJ Gardner-Johnson for one game without pay following an incident in which he was seen spitting in the direction of a Las Vegas Raiders opponent. The league announced the decision Monday, citing a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which pertains to acts contrary to sportsmanship.

Gardner-Johnson was ejected from Sunday's game after the incident, which occurred during a heated exchange with Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. Cameras captured the moment, and an official flagged the action, leading to his removal from the field. He appeared to smile as he left the field.

The league's statement indicated that Gardner-Johnson can appeal the suspension, with the appeal to be heard by one of the jointly appointed hearing officers from the NFL and NFLPA.

Following the game, the 28-year-old safety posted an apology on his Instagram story, addressing his opponent, his team, his organization, and his supporters. He acknowledged his actions were inappropriate and unnecessary, stating, "There is no excuse for my actions, and I take full accountability." He added that while his passion is a part of him, there is a line that should not be crossed and that he must hold himself to a higher standard.

"One moment does not define my character, but how I respond to that moment matters," Gardner-Johnson wrote. "I will learn from this, grow from it, and continue to lead with the integrity, passion, and respect that have carried me throughout my career."

Bills coach Joe Brady stated that the incident reflected poorly on the team and that the discipline of the football team needs to improve. "It can't happen, and it definitely has to be addressed," Brady said. "The team is bigger than that, the situation is bigger than that, everything is bigger."

Raiders coach Klint Kubiak praised his players for not retaliating, noting that they had been warned about potential confrontations with opponents.

Gardner-Johnson is eligible to return to the Bills roster on November 2, following the team's game against the Baltimore Ravens. This is his sixth NFL team in eight seasons, having previously played for the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Chicago Bears. He has been fined multiple times in his career but had not previously faced a suspension.

San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk commented on social media that Gardner-Johnson had allegedly spit on him in a previous game.
