Irish runner Ciara Mageean, who won European gold and competed in two Olympic Games, has died at the age of 34 after a battle with cancer.
Ciara Mageean, a decorated Irish middle-distance runner and two-time Olympian, has died at the age of 34. Her death was announced on social media by her family on Tuesday, stating she "lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones." Mageean, from Portaferry in Northern Ireland, had revealed her cancer diagnosis in July of the previous year. She was also forced to withdraw from the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics due to an Achilles injury.
Career Highlights
Earlier in 2024, Mageean secured the most significant title of her career, winning the 1500m gold medal at the European Championships in Rome. She also represented Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games, earning a 1500m silver medal at Birmingham in 2022.
Mageean's athletic journey began at a young age, though her Olympic aspirations led her to focus on athletics over camogie. Her junior career was marked by success, including 1500m silver medals at the 2010 World Junior Championships and the 2011 European Junior Championships. At just 18, she reached the 1500m final at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Overcoming Adversity
A significant ankle injury in her early senior career hampered her progress and dashed her hopes of competing in the 2012 London Olympics. Following surgery in 2013, Mageean made a strong comeback, winning the Irish 1500m title in July 2014.
In 2016, she claimed 1500m bronze at the European Championships in Amsterdam. Her Olympic debut that year ended at the semi-final stage of the 1500m competition. Later, in 2017, she moved to Manchester to train with Steve Vernon's Team New Balance. Despite some initial setbacks, Mageean achieved European Indoor bronze in March 2019. In 2020, she set a new Irish record in the 1,000m, clocking 2:31.06 and breaking Sonia O'Sullivan's 27-year-old mark at the Diamond League meet in Monaco.
Mageean is remembered as a beloved daughter, sister, wife, and friend, described as an inspiration to many.
