Christian Wade Nears Rugby Premiership Try-Scoring Record
Newcastle wing Christian Wade is one try away from equalling Chris Ashton's Premiership record of 101 tries, aiming for the milestone on Friday.
Christian Wade, a winger for Newcastle, is on the verge of breaking the Premiership try-scoring record, needing just one more try to surpass Chris Ashton's mark of 101 tries. Wade is set to have an opportunity to achieve this feat on Friday.
Wade's career has seen him burst onto the scene with Wasps in 2011, quickly establishing himself as one of the league's most dangerous wingers. He was part of a 'finishing school' at Wasps that included other talented players, and his approach to the game involves viewing defenders as mere obstacles to be navigated.
"I don't see defenders, I just see bodies as obstacles," Wade has said. "You react to what they do. Some of it comes down to instinct."
Despite his success in the Premiership, Wade's international career did not reach the same heights. He represented England at Under 20s, 'A' levels, and earned one senior cap, but never fully cemented his place on the international stage. He was also called up for the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia in 2013, participating in a tour match.
In a notable career shift, Wade spent four years on the practice squads of the Buffalo Bills in the NFL, pursuing American football. However, he never made it into an NFL match before returning to rugby.
This current season marks Wade's ninth full season in the Premiership. He is looking to etch his name further into rugby history, potentially celebrating the record with a shot of tequila.
