Cornerback Christian Gonzalez has signed a record-setting four-year, $135 million contract extension with the New England Patriots, including $102 million in guaranteed money. The deal, finalized in the early hours of Tuesday morning, makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, surpassing the recent deal signed by Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks.
The offseason negotiation had been a point of contention, with reports in August indicating the Patriots were hesitant to meet the market set by Witherspoon's four-year, $132 million contract. ESPN's Adam Schefter noted on Aug. 27 that the Patriots had not appeared willing to match or exceed that figure. Despite the protracted negotiations, Gonzalez continued to participate in training camp, focusing on the upcoming season.
"It's frustrating, but I'm focused on the season," Gonzalez stated on Aug. 25. Fans and media in Boston had expressed frustration with the team's perceived reluctance to commit significant funds to their top cornerback, drawing parallels to owner Robert Kraft's spending habits during Tom Brady's tenure.
Analysis of spending from 2014-23 shows the Patriots spent the least amount of money on their roster among all NFL teams, with their ownership group investing $1.62 billion over that decade. Gonzalez is expected to be active for the Patriots' regular-season opener against the Seahawks on Wednesday.
