Chiefs' Tyquan Thornton Suffers Gruesome Ankle Injury After Game-Changing Catch
Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton reportedly did not initially realize the severity of his injury following a 55-yard reception against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton sustained a severe ankle injury during the fourth quarter of the team's recent game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury occurred moments after Thornton hauled in a crucial 55-yard reception from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, a play that set up a go-ahead touchdown.
Despite the evident severity of the injury, which resulted in his foot pointing in an unnatural direction, Thornton initially appeared unaware of its extent. Adrenaline seemingly masked the pain until he attempted to stand up after being tackled by Raiders safety Treydan Stukes. The graphic nature of the injury was noted by CBS announcers Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt, who expressed immediate concern.
Medical personnel attended to Thornton on the field, placing his left leg in an air cast before he was carted off. The Chiefs have officially ruled him out with an ankle injury, though a more specific diagnosis has not yet been released.
This injury comes as a setback for Thornton, who had been carving out a more significant role with the Chiefs. Originally a second-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2022, he joined the Chiefs' practice squad in November 2024 and was activated to the roster in 2025. He had re-signed in March and was a key contributor last season, recording 19 receptions for 438 yards and three touchdowns. In the game against the Raiders, prior to his injury, Thornton had five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns, marking the first 100-yard performance of his NFL career.
The Chiefs were already dealing with an injury to another receiver, Rashee Rice, who left the game in the first quarter with a hamstring issue and did not return. With both Rice and now Thornton sidelined, Kansas City's receiving corps faces significant challenges.
Despite the injuries, the Chiefs secured a 30-27 victory over the Raiders, improving their record to 4-0. The 55-yard catch by Thornton was instrumental in setting up the game-winning touchdown on the subsequent play.
