Chelsea has finalized the signing of center-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million, pushing the club's total summer expenditure to nearly £275 million. The 26-year-old French international joins the Blues on a contract through 2032, following two seasons with Crystal Palace.

Discussions to accelerate the transfer took place between Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and Palace chairman Steve Parish in New York prior to the World Cup final. Lacroix brings a winning pedigree to Chelsea, having secured the FA Cup, Conference League, and Community Shield during his tenure with Palace.

He becomes Chelsea's seventh summer acquisition, joining previously signed players Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev, and Emmanuel Emegha. Reports indicate that Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson are also expected to move to Stamford Bridge soon.

Crystal Palace is set to make a substantial profit on Lacroix, who was acquired from Wolfsburg in 2024 for £18 million. The defender, described as a devout Christian, has swapped south London for west London.

Lacroix's 2025-26 Season Highlights

During the 2025-26 season with Crystal Palace, Lacroix was instrumental in their Conference League victory. He started 35 Premier League matches, recording 11 clean sheets. His defensive prowess was statistically notable, as he boasted the highest success rate in one-on-one defensive situations among Premier League players who faced at least 50 such duels, winning possession 50.5% of the time. He was the sole player in the league to achieve at least 50 tackles (52), 250 clearances (252), and 200 duels won (204). Within his former club, he ranked first for clearances, third for defensive contributions, second for accurate passes, and second for interceptions per 90 minutes. His performances also earned him a spot in the Conference League team of the season. Lacroix made his debut for France on March 26 in an international friendly against Brazil and participated in three World Cup matches, including the third-place playoff against England.

Player and Club Perspectives

Lacroix expressed his excitement about the move, stating, "I am really happy to be part of this beautiful club. Everyone knows the legend of Chelsea, its tradition of winning, and to be a part of that is a proud moment." He added, "When I spoke with the manager, I saw that we have the same direction and desire for this club. We want to win." He anticipates contributing to the team's ambition of lifting trophies, citing the quality of players and club infrastructure.

In a message to Crystal Palace fans, Lacroix conveyed his gratitude: "Dear Palace fans, it has been a true privilege to wear the Eagles shirt and to be part of this club's history. The memories I will cherish forever are the love, the unwavering support, and the incredible moments of success we shared together."

Palace chairman Steve Parish acknowledged Lacroix's contributions: "Max has been fantastic since he came to the club, being a huge part of our trophy-winning seasons and building a special bond with everyone at the club and the supporters." He thanked Lacroix for his service and wished him well in his future career, noting his impact both on and off the pitch.

Chelsea's Strategic Aims

Lacroix is expected to assume a significant first-team role under new manager Xabi Alonso. His arrival is aimed at bolstering the squad to help Chelsea return to the Champions League, a goal highlighted by their disappointing 10th-place finish in the previous season. The club's transfer activity also includes ongoing discussions regarding Trevoh Chalobah's future, with Italian club Como reportedly submitting a £35 million offer. Como's previous proposals for the 27-year-old defender were rejected, and they are working to meet Chelsea's valuation with a structured deal. Chalobah also recently participated in the World Cup for England, making a brief appearance in the match against France.
