Premier League club Chelsea has rebranded its top academy squads, the Under-21 and Under-19 teams, as 'Cobham Next Gen' starting this season. The change applies to their participation in the Premier League 2 and the UEFA Under-19 Youth League competitions.
The club stated that the new name better reflects the age profile of the leading academy side and its objective of developing players for the senior team. Last season, the Under-21 squad that finished atop the Premier League 2 often featured players closer to Under-18 age, with some as young as 16.
"The new name more accurately reflects the age profile of our leading Academy side and Chelsea's long-standing heritage of developing the next generation of players for the senior game," the club said in a statement. "While the squad competed in Premier League 2 as an Under-21s side, its average age last season was closer to that of an Under-18s group, with several players as young as 16 years old featuring regularly."
The rebranding also aims to enhance the academy's identity, signifying a group of players progressing through the final stages of their development pathway toward the men's first team. The club emphasized its approach of providing opportunities for young players to compete above their natural age group, a strategy that saw one of the youngest squads in the Premier League 2 finish at the top of the table last season.
Chelsea's academy, located in Cobham, Surrey, is recognized as one of the most profitable in world football. Since 2022, the club has generated over £305 million from academy player sales, including Trevoh Chalobah's recent £25 million move to Como.
Juventus also uses the 'Next Gen' designation for their Serie C team, although Chelsea's rebranding is specific to their top youth development squads.
