Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has initiated a significant mechanical adjustment for star quarterback Justin Herbert, focusing on his stance when operating out of the shotgun formation. The change, reported by ESPN on July 2, involves altering Herbert's foot placement in the shotgun.
Previously, Herbert utilized a shotgun stance with his dominant right foot forward. Under McDaniel's guidance, the alignment has shifted so that his non-dominant left foot is now positioned slightly ahead of his right. McDaniel stated that this adjustment is designed to provide a "millisecond competitive advantage," particularly benefiting short passes and timing-dependent plays like run-pass options through marginally faster footwork.
This technique is one McDaniel has employed with other NFL quarterbacks, notably Tua Tagovailoa during their four seasons together with the Miami Dolphins. The offensive coordinator appears to believe this mechanical refinement will reduce Herbert's reliance on his strong throwing arm and instead emphasize proper mechanics for efficient ball delivery.
Herbert has experienced stance modifications before; he used a balanced stance during his collegiate career at the University of Oregon. The quarterback expressed a belief that the change will not be drastically impactful, reportedly stating, "I don’t think it’s too much of a difference."
This footwork adjustment is likely the first of several strategic changes McDaniel, known for his creative schemes developed in Miami, will implement within the Chargers' offense. His tenure with the Dolphins saw the team achieve significant offensive success. While any alterations to the team's strategy will require approval from Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, the upcoming season is anticipated to be compelling as observers watch for the impact of McDaniel's modifications on the Chargers' offense.
