The Champions Cup will implement significant changes to its bonus point system and last-16 qualification criteria for the upcoming 2026-27 season, aiming to enhance match competitiveness and fan interest. The tournament will also shift its start date to October, moving away from its traditional December launch.
Under the revised bonus point rules, teams will only receive a bonus point if they score at least three more tries than their opponents in the pool stage. This differs from the previous rule, which awarded a bonus point for scoring four or more tries regardless of the opponent's try count. This new approach, already in use in France's Top 14 and Super Rugby, is intended to prevent teams with a comfortable lead from easing off in the latter stages of matches and losing the opportunity to gain bonus points.
In addition to the bonus point adjustments, the qualification path for the knockout stages has been altered. Previously, the top four teams from each of the four six-team pools advanced directly to the last-16. Now, only the top three teams from each pool will automatically qualify. The remaining four spots in the last-16 will be determined by overall table points collected across all pools. This change is designed to prevent scenarios where teams with fewer wins advance over those with more wins, as occurred in a previous season where two teams with a single win progressed ahead of a team that had secured two wins.
The shift to an October start aims to build momentum and engagement earlier in the season. Despite these changes, the tournament faces ongoing criticism regarding its unwieldy format, logistical challenges posed by the inclusion of South African teams, the absence of a full round-robin structure, and perceived variations in team quality among the 24 participating clubs.
Organizers remain confident that South African teams will participate in the 2026-27 season, though their future involvement in European competition is under consideration. Discussions about potentially reducing the tournament to 16 clubs or restructuring it into a single block of fixtures have been suggested as ways to elevate its prestige. However, any such fundamental changes would require unanimous agreement from all stakeholders, with current contractual agreements in place until 2030.
The draw for the 2026-27 pool stage is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
