Chalobah Advocates for European Football Moves, Cites Clooney as Neighbor
England defender Trevoh Chalobah discusses his positive experience playing for Como in Italy and encourages other British footballers to explore international leagues.
Trevoh Chalobah, the England and Como defender, has spoken about the benefits of playing football abroad, suggesting that a European adventure can be valuable for a footballer's career. He highlighted his personal experience in the picturesque Italian city of Como, noting its appeal includes being a neighbor to actor George Clooney.
Chalobah shared that he has settled well in Como, appreciating the scenery, food, and the support from the club and local people. "I think it’s very important to get that into your CV, into your career," Chalobah said. "As a player, it’s good to try different leagues. I played in the Premier League for many years so it was the right time to move to Serie A and hopefully have another successful time."
His move to Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, was part of a summer deal worth over £30 million. Chalobah, who spent nearly two decades with Chelsea before his transfer, expressed no regrets about leaving his boyhood club. "Growing up at Chelsea, with what they did for me, and how they allowed me to get to the first team, I enjoyed every moment, the trophies I won, the big games I played in," he stated. "It’s been amazing. I felt now was the right time to try something different and try something new."
He also noted the increasing presence of Premier League players in Italy, mentioning goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who joined Como on loan from Chelsea. Chalobah described Serie A as more tactical compared to the faster, more physical style of the Premier League. He is actively learning the Italian language, taking four lessons per week.
Chalobah's transfer to Como followed his debut for England in the World Cup third-place play-off against France. He described the experience of playing in the World Cup as fulfilling a long-held ambition. "Whether it’s three minutes or two seconds, it was an amazing feeling to come on in that game, to make my World Cup debut," he said.
He also commented on the high level of competition within the England squad, suggesting that training sessions with elite players like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham can be more challenging than actual matches. "Most definitely," Chalobah responded when asked if training could be tougher. "It can only improve you as a player when you’re training with elite players."
