The Boston Celtics selected Dillon Mitchell of St. John's with the 40th overall pick in the NBA draft on Wednesday. This marks the first time since 2000 that two St. John's players have been drafted in the same year. Mitchell's selection follows his teammate Zuby Ejiofor, who was chosen 23rd overall by the Atlanta Hawks earlier in the evening, ending a 14-year drought for St. John's without a first-round pick.
Mason 6-foot-7 Mitchell, a gifted athlete and lockdown defender, played a significant role in St. John's repeating as Big East regular season and postseason champions. He was utilized at times as a point forward, contributing to his draft stock. His versatility, enabling him to play multiple positions and guard various opponents, is considered his strongest asset, though his shooting ability is noted as an area for development. During his sole year at St. John's, Mitchell averaged 8.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
Mitchell became a fan favorite during his time in Queens and reportedly influenced Tounde Yessoufou of Baylor, a top transfer, to join St. John's after pulling out of the draft. Mitchell impressed NBA teams during the draft combine in May, participating in 16 different workouts. While early mock drafts predicted him to be selected in the 50s or go undrafted, his stock rose in recent weeks, leading to his selection early in the second round.
Mason The NBA draft now holds increased significance for St. John's, with the consecutive selections representing a notable achievement for the program.
