Celtic's Europa League Hopes Diminish After Home Defeat to Celta Vigo
Late goals from Javi Rodriguez seal a comeback victory for the Spanish side, leaving Celtic with no points from their opening three group matches.
Celtic's chances of advancing in the Europa League have been severely damaged after a 2-1 home defeat to Celta Vigo. The Scottish club conceded two goals in quick succession in the second half, turning the game on its head after taking the lead.
Three days before the clocks change, Celtic found themselves running out of time to meet minimal expectations in the Europa League this season. With no points after three matches, the task of scrambling towards the 11 points that typically guarantee qualification for the knockout round now appears daunting. The next group stage match is at home against Besiktas in two weeks, and a failure to secure a win then would likely end Celtic's European involvement for the season.
Beyond the points, it was imperative for Martin O'Neill's side to end a run of losses against LASK, Ferencvaros, and Benfica with a victory or at least a draw and an improved performance. However, they were outplayed for large portions of the match.
Celta Vigo displayed quality throughout the game, and while not considered among the top European sides, they demonstrated that accomplishment is not always required to secure a European victory at Parkhead. The defeat is becoming an embarrassing affair for Celtic in a competition where their legendary Lisbon Lions' 60th anniversary is approaching next year.
Celtic edged in front early in the second half through Mika Baur. However, the sense of confidence among the home supporters that their team could hold on was not strong. Javi Rodriguez, a central defender, scored two goals within three minutes to secure the win for Celta, who were toying with Celtic by the final whistle.
Sam Johnstone returned in goal for Celtic, replacing Viljami Sinisalo. Carl Starfelt was absent due to injury, as was Borja Iglesias for the Spanish visitors.
The atmosphere at Parkhead was notably subdued due to a protest by the Green Brigade, and empty seats were visible, reflecting a European campaign that has so far failed to ignite the imagination of the fanbase.
In the first half, Celta Vigo controlled possession and were slick in their build-up play, though they lacked a cutting edge. Celtic struggled to get on the ball and create chances. Johnstone was tested by efforts from Ferran Jutgia and Hugo Burcio, with his defense blocking shots.
Despite struggling to assert themselves, Celtic showed more aggression towards the end of the first half. An enterprising run by Camilo Duran was halted, and Callum Osmand fired over the bar. The space down Celtic's right flank when Celta countered posed problems, with Haissem Hassan's positioning often leaving Donovan exposed. Jutgia had another effort wide, and Johnstone saved a subsequent shot.
The second half began with Celtic taking the lead just two minutes after the restart. Hassan made a decisive run and delivered a cross that was contested and unconvincingly cleared, falling to Baur, whose shot beat Celta goalkeeper Ionut Radu.
Nygren then had a chance to extend the lead, only to be denied by the goalkeeper. Celta responded quickly, with Johnstone saving an Iago Aspas strike and Aleix Febas shooting wide.
Osmand was substituted due to cramp, replaced by James Forrest. On the other wing, Hassan continued to be a threat, and his cross found Liam Scales, whose header struck the crossbar.
As Celta pressed, Duran went down under a challenge, prompting an appeal for a foul from O'Neill, which resulted in a booking for dissent. Moments later, Celta equalized from a free-kick. Hugo Alvarez delivered a precise cross, and Rodriguez's powerful header beat Johnstone, who could not keep it out.
Within four minutes, Celta completed their comeback. Amidst defensive disarray from Celtic, Rodriguez struck again from the edge of the box with a clean connection, leaving Johnstone with no chance. The match concluded with Celta Vigo in control, a familiar and painful outcome for Celtic supporters in European competition.
