Celtic Football Club has announced the arrival of five new players, including former England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and teenage talents Shumaira Mheuka and Landon Emenalo from Chelsea. These signings follow recent additions, bolstering the team's roster.
Johnstone, who last represented England in 2023, joins Celtic on loan after a spell with the relegated Wolves. He made 17 appearances for Wolves last season but lost his starting position in December and had not played since early March. Johnstone expressed enthusiasm about joining the club, noting the positive reinforcement he received from former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.
"I'm buzzing to be here and I'm excited to get going," Johnstone said. "I didn't need convincing by anyone, but Joe Hart rang me the other day just to reiterate what a place this is, what a great group of lads and how the fans are unbelievable. You hear about the size of the club, but just being here for a day, you notice how big the club is. And the pressure to win, which is what I like - pressure to win, pressure to perform and we all want to win trophies."
Johnstone began his career at Manchester United and has previously played for Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace. His arrival comes after Kasper Schmeichel, the previous first-choice goalkeeper since the summer of 2024, retired due to a shoulder injury after his last game in February.
Manager Martin O'Neill has described Johnstone as a "very good addition" to the squad. O'Neill also commented on the new left-back, Emenalo, highlighting his attributes. "[Emenalo] has many attributes which I think can benefit us," O'Neill stated. "He is very quick on the ball and, while he can defend, he certainly gets up the pitch into attacking positions too." The manager also noted that Mheuka possesses "great quality."
