Inter Miami announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro on Wednesday, a move that has prompted Major League Soccer to launch an investigation into potential tampering violations by the club.

Casemiro, a five-time Champions League winner, has agreed to a contract with Inter Miami through the end of the 2027 season, with an option for an extension through June 2029. The 34-year-old midfielder previously played for Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The league is currently transitioning to an international-style summer-to-spring calendar. To bridge the gap between seasons in 2026 and the full 2027-28 season, MLS has established a one-time, truncated "2027 Sprint Season" scheduled from February to May 2027.

League rules state that discovery rights for Casemiro were held by the LA Galaxy, which would have prevented Inter Miami from negotiating with the player. The two clubs have since reached a settlement to allow the signing to proceed. However, the MLS investigation into the tampering allegation is ongoing.

"The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete," MLS said in a statement. "While Inter Miami CF and the LA Galaxy have reached a settlement for the Discovery Priority to sign Casemiro, the terms will be released upon conclusion of the tampering investigation."

It remains unclear when Casemiro will make his debut for Inter Miami, as he is still awaiting the necessary visa. Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, stating, "He is a winner who has achieved so much in the game and after such an incredible career with Real Madrid and Manchester United I’m delighted that he’s decided to make Miami his next home."
