Carrick Defends Man United Players Amidst Criticism
Manager Michael Carrick has refuted claims of unprofessionalism among his Manchester United squad, expressing his unwavering support for the players.
Michael Carrick has publicly rejected accusations that his Manchester United players have been unprofessional, asserting his commitment to standing by the squad despite intense criticism from pundits and supporters. The manager's remarks come after former teammate Gary Neville suggested some players were not adhering to proper routines regarding sleep and diet.
Following a recent 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, Manchester United fans voiced their discontent, with some reportedly applauding Carrick as he left the field while directing their frustration at the players. When questioned about the specific unprofessional behavior alluded to by Neville, Carrick responded, "No, I haven’t. Gaz says a lot of things!"
Carrick confirmed he held a meeting with the players upon their return to the Carrington training ground. He emphasized that the discussion was aimed at reinforcing unity and solidarity, stating, "It was more for them to understand that I'm right in there with them. There's no way that I'm separated from that." He acknowledged the supporters' reactions but stressed his alignment with the team. "As much as I totally respect and appreciate the response from the supporters, I'm right there with them and we'll go through this together."
He continued, "It wasn't a nice situation, but to feel that was important, of course. But it didn't make me feel better in the fact that I'm with the players 100 percent. We're all in it together and I've told the players that. I'm happy to say that. I didn't feel comfortable being separated from that in any way, shape or form. That's my group, they're my players and this is my football club, so we have to all be in it together."
Carrick also addressed the broader context of fan sentiment, noting, "That includes the supporters. As hard as it is at the moment, I totally get that. I get their feelings. When we get through this, we'll be a lot stronger as a whole. We need to play better and we need to show certain things better. But the connection with us is as strong as ever."
The team's recent performance has also drawn criticism towards the club's ownership, the Glazer family, and figures such as chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.
Describing the nature of his conversations with the players, Carrick stated, "It's pretty clear. It's not always rosy and nice conversations between anyone, whether that's between me and the players, whether that's between me, Jason or Omar or the owners. It's the hard truth at times and it's what we need to move forward."
