Michael Carrick, manager of Manchester United, has expressed confidence that the team can contend for trophies this season, despite a summer transfer window where rivals significantly outspent the club. Carrick stated that financial outlay is not the sole determinant of success and believes his squad has the intrinsic qualities to compete.
"I certainly feel we can compete," Carrick said. "I think the challenge is just getting the right dynamics, the right balance, the right group together, the best players in the group to enhance the rest. The actual amount of money in the end, I understand it can be a big thing. It doesn't always have to be the answer, but it can be."
Manchester United's summer rebuild focused on strengthening the midfield with the signings of Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos, and Youri Tielemans, totaling approximately £155 million. However, this figure was overshadowed by the spending of other Premier League clubs, and even some newly promoted teams.
Carrick emphasized that his team's recent performance and development are key indicators of their potential. He highlighted the team's eight-month journey under his management, which saw them finish third in the league and secure a return to the Champions League. This period included a notable 1-0 victory over Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in February.
"It is what it is. I think we know what we have, and what we can achieve. Money is one thing. What you do with it and how you make the most of it is another thing," Carrick remarked. "There's obviously some teams that are a bit further down the line than us. We've been here eight months or so, and some of the players have been here just not long before me. But it's up to us to do the work and get the best out of the group."
He added that there is a palpable sense of "freshness and an excitement" within the squad, coupled with a strong desire to achieve significant results. Carrick believes this confidence is grounded in the team's recent history and their ability to perform consistently.
"They know what it's taken to put that run together. Granted, there was one competition, and we need to do that an awful lot more this season, but we have strengthened the group, so we feel good about what's possible," he stated. "We know the challenges that we face, of course we do. It's not an instant thing, but I think we're moving in the right direction, that's for sure."
Manchester United's next fixture is a Champions League match against Sabah on Thursday.
