Carolina Panthers Fire Defensive Coordinator Ejiro Evero
The move comes after a string of disappointing defensive performances and a recent loss to the Green Bay Packers.
The Carolina Panthers have fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, along with defensive pass-game coordinator Jonathan Cooley, just hours after the team's recent defeat to the Green Bay Packers. This decision marks the first coordinator change in the NFL this season.
The Panthers' defense has been a significant concern, consistently allowing a high number of points and contributing to losses. This latest loss to the Packers brought the team's season record to 5-3. The defensive struggles follow a particularly difficult performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where the team surrendered 43 points.
Evero was hired in 2023 and remained with the team after Dave Canales took over as head coach in 2024, replacing Frank Reich. Despite significant offseason investment in the defensive unit, the team has seen little improvement in its performance. While the offense, led by Dave Canales and quarterback Bryce Young, has shown promise, the defense has repeatedly hampered the team's success.
