Reigning U.S. Open champion Carlos Alcaraz experienced a moment of humorous confusion regarding his potential next opponent in the tournament's quarterfinals. After defeating Tommy Paul to advance, Alcaraz appeared on ESPN and was asked by commentator Andy Roddick about facing either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Ben Shelton.

"Oh my god, I thought I was playing [Daniil] Medvedev-[Frances] Tiafoe," Alcaraz said, expressing shock. He added, "Thank you man." The unexpected revelation drew laughter from the ESPN panel.

Alcaraz attempted to discuss the potential matchups, but Roddick's laughter made the conversation difficult to continue. When asked if he would watch the match to determine his opponent, Alcaraz affirmed, "For sure I’m going to watch it."

Later, after Ben Shelton defeated Tsitsipas in straight sets to secure his quarterfinal spot against Alcaraz, the Spanish player addressed reporters with a clearer understanding. "If it is Shelton, really powerful player," Alcaraz said. "I think he use the crowd, the people behind him, especially when he’s playing here at home. I’m excited about playing the quarterfinal, either if it is against one or other. So I’ve got to be ready. I’m going to watch it, and I’ll be ready for that."

Alcaraz is aiming to become the first man in nearly two decades to repeat as U.S. Open champion.
