Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck made a compelling case for playing time with an impressive performance in his professional debut during the Hall of Fame Game against the Carolina Panthers.
Beck, a third-round pick, completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. He connected with Jalen Brooks for a 49-yard gain and later threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Simi Fehoko. The rookie also managed the game effectively, taking only a two-yard loss on a sack.
While Beck's performance came against a Panthers defense missing several key players, including injured edge rusher Nic Scourton and healthy scratches like defensive lineman Derrick Brown, linebacker Devin Lloyd, and defensive backs Jaycee Horn and Tre'Von Moehrig, his play generated significant excitement among fans and observers.
Beck's collegiate career included guiding Miami to the College Football Playoff championship and two national titles as a backup at the University of Georgia. His performance has led to speculation about potentially unseating veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett for the starting role.
Another quarterback making his professional debut, Haynes King of the Carolina Panthers, also showed promise. The undrafted quarterback from Georgia Tech completed 21 of 34 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. King led the Panthers on a game-winning drive in the final two minutes, capping it with a five-yard touchdown run on the final play to give Carolina a 33-30 victory.
Beck and King have a history, having faced each other in a memorable college game in 2024 where Georgia narrowly defeated Georgia Tech in eight overtimes. In that contest, King threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns while adding 110 yards and three scores on the ground, while Beck passed for 297 yards and five touchdowns.
