Belfast's Caoimhin Agyarko is set to challenge Josh Kelly for the IBF light-middleweight title on Saturday, with a victory that would make him Ireland's first black professional boxing champion.

Agyarko's journey to this title opportunity has been marked by significant challenges both inside and outside the ring. A 2023 victory over Troy Williamson, which was anticipated to be a career springboard, led to a frustrating year with only one minor bout.

While quick wins in early 2025 led to a bout with Ishmael Davis at Windsor Park, Agyarko endured a split decision victory after being knocked down and sustaining a swollen eye. The fighter's path was further disrupted in April when a scheduled final eliminator against Brandon Adams in Las Vegas was canceled after Adams collapsed before the weigh-in.

Despite the IBF ordering another eliminator against former champion Bakhram Murtazaliev, a deal was eventually struck for Agyarko to face Kelly.

The fighter has spoken about his resilience in overcoming adversity. In May 2017, at the age of 20, Agyarko suffered a life-threatening slashing injury to his face during an unprovoked attack in Belfast city center, requiring emergency surgery.

"Things have happened for a reason, in and out of the ring: setbacks after setbacks in boxing and in life," Agyarko stated. "I'm used to this and the one thing I've never let any of it do was break me. I've been very resilient over the past 10 years since the stabbing, but my mindset now is 'these things happen', so what can I do to keep pushing forward instead of dwelling on a situation that is out of my hands?"

Agyarko's determination to overcome his past setbacks fuels his ambition for the upcoming title fight.
