Cammy Devlin has completed a move to Rangers, signing a two-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months. The transfer marks the end of Devlin's five-year tenure at Hearts, where he became a significant midfield presence.

Devlin's departure comes after contract extension negotiations at Tynecastle failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion. Hearts announced on Friday that the midfielder had not accepted their final offer, which reportedly would have made him the highest-paid player at the club.

The move to Ibrox reunites Devlin with former Hearts manager Derek McInnes, who also made the switch earlier in the summer. This follows a pattern of key personnel leaving Tynecastle for Rangers, a situation described as an "open wound" for Hearts.

While Devlin's previous transfer from Newcastle Jets to Hearts in 2021 involved a European club release clause, his current move is on a free transfer, meaning Hearts will not receive any compensation. This contrasts with his earlier move to Scotland, where the Australian midfielder was enticed from the A-League with the possibility of European football.

Devlin's departure, along with that of club captain Lawrence Shankland, has intensified a period of uncertainty for Hearts. The club's strategy, based on a player trading model, typically involves buying low and selling high. However, the loss of several key assets so close to the new campaign presents a significant challenge for new head coach Wouter Vrancken.

Rangers supporters have had a mixed reaction to Devlin's signing, with some questioning the need for another midfielder given the existing squad depth. Reports suggest potential moves for Nicolas Raskin and Connor Barron could still occur, but even then, the club has several midfielders on its roster, with further transfer targets also being pursued.

Despite the lukewarm reception from some fans, Devlin is recognized as one of the league's top defensive midfielders. His tenacity and work rate without the ball are considered his key attributes, though his sometimes overzealous approach has also led to a notable number of yellow cards. His signing is expected to bolster Rangers' prospects for a sustained title challenge next season, particularly under McInnes, who has a history of maximizing Devlin's performance.
