Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley has shared details about a significant offseason illness, attributing a severe stomach bug to a meal from a fast-casual Mexican chain. Ridley stated the illness caused him to lose approximately 15 pounds in a single 24-hour period.
"Oh, yeah, I did," Ridley said when asked about a recent offseason bout with a 24-hour bug. "I've actually had that a couple of times in my life; maybe three or four times. It's not a good thing. It's like a 24-hour thing, but it really puts you down pretty good."
When questioned by reporters about potential links to recent Cyclospora outbreaks, Ridley identified the restaurant. While Chipotle has not been officially linked to any reported Cyclospora incidents, the wide receiver indicated the meal was from the popular burrito chain. A representative for Chipotle was reached out to for comment regarding Ridley's situation.
This incident brings to light broader discussions about foodborne illnesses and their association with certain types of cuisine. While Ridley is reportedly feeling better, the narrative surrounding his illness highlights a common perception that Mexican food is often implicated when gastrointestinal issues arise, a connection that observers note may be unfair or presumptive without definitive evidence.
