Caitlin Clark Confronts Referee After Bloody Mouth Incident in Playoff Loss
Fever star points to injured mouth, draws ire of coach after no-call leads to season-ending defeat.
Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark directly addressed a referee, pointing to her bloody mouth after she sustained an injury from an elbow to the face that resulted in no foul being called during the team's season-ending Game 3 loss to the Las Vegas Aces.
The incident occurred with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter as the Fever trailed by five points. While competing for a rebound, Clark was elbowed by Aces guard Jewell Loyd. Clark immediately reacted, appearing to grab her mouth and requiring attention on the baseline. As she returned from receiving medical attention, Clark was seen gesturing towards a referee and indicating her injured mouth, seemingly in protest of the uncalled foul.
Fever head coach Stephanie White expressed her frustration with the play by calling a timeout. "Steph White calls time because the play would not have been stopped otherwise," one of the broadcasters noted. "And White is not happy that the officials missed something."
Following the 94-83 loss that concluded the Fever's season, White highlighted the disparity in free throws awarded. "It's a game of the margins," White stated. "They had 35 free throws and we had 20."
Clark, who scored 11 points in the first quarter, was held to seven points for the remainder of the game. This marks the second consecutive year the Las Vegas Aces have eliminated the Fever from the playoffs. The Aces will now advance to face the winner of the Golden State-Dallas series.
