Moises Caicedo has officially become the captain of the Ecuador national football team, receiving the armband from veteran striker Enner Valencia during an emotional ceremony mid-World Cup.
The handover occurred in front of teammates after Ecuador secured their advancement to the knockout stages of the tournament. Valencia, 36, formally passed the captaincy to Caicedo, 24, signaling a new era for the squad which features significant young talent.
Caicedo, who joined Chelsea for a reported £115 million, is considered a central figure for Ecuador's future. He has previously served as vice-captain and worn the armband in recent matches. Valencia's gesture acknowledges the team's transition.
Ecuador's progression to the knockout rounds marks a significant achievement, being their first such berth in twenty years. The team secured their place with a 2-1 victory over Germany, overcoming the historical dominance of continental rivals like Brazil and Argentina. After an initial defeat to Ivory Coast, Ecuador drew with Curacao before their crucial win against Germany. Caicedo wore the armband during the victory over Germany, while Valencia skippered the team in the earlier matches.
The team now looks ahead to a potential match against England in the next stage, provided they defeat co-hosts Mexico.
