BYU Favored Over Struggling TCU in Week 5 College Football Matchup

BYU, ranked No. 10 in the nation, is set to face TCU on Saturday, with the Cougars entering the contest undefeated at 3-0 for the 2026 season. BYU has secured victories over Utah Tech, Arizona, and Colorado State, demonstrating a consistent performance under head coach Kalani Sitake.

In contrast, TCU has experienced a more challenging start to their season. The Horned Frogs, projected to struggle after the departure of quarterback Josh Hoover, have faced difficulties. Their season began with a loss to UNC in Ireland, followed by another defeat against UCF. While they have secured wins against Grambling State and Arkansas State, their offensive performance has been a significant concern, particularly since quarterback Jaden Craig's transfer from Harvard has not yielded the expected results.

While BYU's No. 10 ranking may appear flattering by some metrics, the team is considered a solid unit. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier, a sophomore, has yet to reach his full potential this season, but showed flashes of capability last year. The Cougars' defense has been effective, allowing an average of just 3.3 yards per attempt, ranking 32nd nationally.

TCU's defense has performed admirably thus far, but has not yet faced an offense of BYU's caliber. The Horned Frogs' offensive struggles put significant pressure on their defense, leaving little room for error. Although TCU's run game has shown promise in recent weeks and could be key to supporting quarterback Craig, they face a BYU defense that has proven adept at limiting opposing ground attacks.

TCU Horned Frogs quarterback Jaden Craig (1) prepares to pass the ball while under pressure from a UCF Knights defender.

Despite not having an elite offensive showing yet, BYU's ability to win consistently, combined with TCU's offensive deficiencies, positions the Cougars as favorites. The prediction favors BYU to cover the 6.5-point spread, with the play being BYU -6.5 at -110 odds.
