Buffalo, New York, boasts the most passionate and engaged NFL fanbase, according to a new "Local NFL fandom index" released by Nielsen. The study measured 30 NFL markets across eight key metrics, including apparel purchases, general interest, live event attendance, betting intent, social media engagement, radio listenership, streaming habits, and linear TV viewership.

Kansas City and Green Bay/Appleton followed Buffalo in the rankings, with Philadelphia also cracking the top five. Nielsen's report suggests that smaller and mid-sized markets often see higher fan engagement due to less competition from other entertainment options, particularly during the fall and winter months.

Cities like Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland achieved high scores partly due to strong local radio listenership, television viewership, and game attendance relative to their market size. Green Bay and Buffalo were also noted for high merchandise sales, with Detroit also ranking in the top five for this metric, potentially boosted by recent team success.

Conversely, larger markets and those with significant populations from other regions, such as Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tampa, and New York, tended to rank lower. These areas often face greater competition for entertainment and have a higher concentration of fans supporting teams from elsewhere.

Despite the challenges of a large market, Philadelphia Eagles fans secured a top-five position. While not leading in any single metric, the fanbase ranked in the top five for five of the eight categories measured. Nielsen noted that the success of a team, such as the Kansas City Chiefs' consistent Super Bowl contention and the Buffalo Bills' recent playoff appearances with quarterback Josh Allen, significantly influences fan engagement.

The index highlights that factors beyond market size contribute to fan passion, with team performance playing a crucial role in maintaining high levels of interest and dedication among supporters. The "Bills Mafia" can now point to this data as evidence of their standing as the most dedicated fans in the NFL.
