Bublik Fights Through Self-Inflicted Injury to Advance at Shanghai Masters
Kazakhstani tennis player Alexander Bublik smashed his racket and a drinks cooler, cutting his hand in the process, before ultimately winning his Shanghai Masters match.
Alexander Bublik's volatile on-court behavior resurfaced during his victory in the Shanghai Masters' last-32 match on Sunday. Despite a significant outburst that resulted in a self-inflicted injury, Bublik defeated American Brandon Nakashima with a score of 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Bublik's frustration boiled over after losing the first set tie-break, where he had squandered two set points. In a fit of rage, the 29-year-old smashed his racket on the hard court five times, rendering it unusable. His anger continued as he kicked his seat and then threw the broken racket aside. He further escalated his outburst by punching a nearby drinks cooler with his right hand, causing its cover to shatter.
Momentarily incapacitated by his actions, Bublik sustained a cut to his right arm from smashing the cooler. He received a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct from chair umpire John Blom. Following the warning, Bublik requested a medical time-out, and a physio attended to his bleeding wound. Despite the injury and the earlier disruption, Bublik managed to regain his composure to secure the win.
The victory sets up a last-16 clash with top seed Alexander Zverev. This incident marks the latest in a series of controversial moments involving the current world No. 22. In 2020, Bublik famously stated he "hated tennis with all his heart," attributing his participation solely to prize money.
Earlier this year, during the Geneva Open in May, Bublik made disparaging remarks about Arthur Rinderknech's appearance and nationality, caught on camera saying in Russian, "He's French. And if he's French, then he's basically a little girl who could fold at any moment. There's nothing manly about him - just look at him."
