Bruno Guimaraes has informed Newcastle United that he wishes to depart the club, with Arsenal identified as his primary suitor. Despite the midfielder's expressed desire to leave, Newcastle maintain that Guimaraes is not currently for sale, placing the onus on Arsenal to submit an offer that could alter the club's stance.
Sources indicated in late June that representatives for the Brazil international had been exploring the market. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to bolster his midfield options ahead of the club's title defense campaign and has pinpointed Guimaraes as a key target. Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in 2022 and was appointed captain in 2024, has two years remaining on his contract. The club is now anticipating a renewed bid.
Newcastle's squad has already seen departures this transfer window, including midfield partner Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and forward Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. The club's inbound transfers have been limited, with the notable additions of forward Bazoumana Toure for £43 million and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen.
The potential loss of their captain would be a significant blow to Eddie Howe's squad, which finished 12th in the Premier League last season. Guimaraes' departure could necessitate a substantial squad rebuild if Newcastle aims to improve on their recent performance.
Guimaraes recently voiced his disappointment following Newcastle's 2-0 loss to Fulham on the final day of the season, stating on social media, "A very frustrating season, and without a doubt we are all very disappointed. You fans definitely did not deserve this."
Newcastle continues to negotiate for Johan Manzambi, with Sean Steur having arrived for his medical ahead of a proposed £22.6 million transfer from Ajax.
