In a remarkable display of athletic synchronicity, brothers George Lombard Jr. and Jacob Lombard both homered in their respective professional baseball debuts on Tuesday, with their powerful blasts occurring minutes apart.
George Lombard Jr., a prospect for the New York Yankees, marked his Major League Baseball debut against the St. Louis Cardinals at Yankee Stadium by hitting a home run in the fifth inning. This accomplishment came shortly after his younger brother, Jacob Lombard, achieved a similar milestone in his professional debut.
Jacob, a shortstop drafted 14th overall by the Miami Marlins in the recent draft, homered in his second at-bat for the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Marlins' Single-A affiliate. He connected with a 1-0 slider from Palm Beach Cardinals pitcher Peyton Graham, sending it over the left-field fence.
Just moments later, George faced St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Hunter Dobbins, hitting an 0-2 sweeper deep to left field for his own debut home run.
The coincidences extended beyond the identical achievements. Both home runs were hit to left field, and both were against teams named the Cardinals. Furthermore, the exit velocities and launch angles were strikingly similar: Jacob’s blast registered at 99.9 mph with a 33-degree launch angle, while George’s came off the bat at 100.2 mph, also at a 33-degree launch angle.
"It’s hard to put into words," Jacob Lombard told FishOnFirst’s Nate Karzmer after his game. "That’s pretty ridiculous, I’m jaw-dropped. I don’t even know how it’s possible."
The evening was particularly emotional for the Lombard family. George Sr., a coach for the Detroit Tigers, and his wife, Judy Lombard, were present at Yankee Stadium to witness their elder son’s MLB debut. They had originally planned to travel to Florida to see Jacob’s debut but changed their plans when George received his late-night call-up on Monday.
"The family was planning on going to watch Jacob down in Jupiter," George Lombard Jr. told reporters. "But my brother was like, ‘You gotta go up there.’ So plans kind of changed."
Judy Lombard shared during a YES Network interview that she had just purchased tickets for Jacob's game before learning of her son's call-up to the majors. George Lombard Jr. is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Yankees’ top prospect.
George Lombard Jr.’s home run, combined with strong defensive plays at shortstop, contributed to the Yankees' 2-0 victory over the Cardinals. He finished his debut game 1-for-4 with the home run. Jacob Lombard’s Jupiter Hammerheads secured a 6-3 win, with his home run being a key part of their offense.
"You don’t ever get these days back," George Sr. commented from his seat at Yankee Stadium. "This was as emotional as any day we’ve had with our boys."
