Josh Tarling is set to compete in the Vuelta a Espana, commencing this Saturday in Monaco, a mere eight days after the tragic death of his younger brother, Finlay. The 22-year-old has been named in the eight-man squad for the third Grand Tour of the season by his team, Netcompany INEOS.
Finlay Tarling, 19, died during the Tour of Portugal last Friday after being struck by a van. Police reported that spectators, believing all cyclists had passed, directed the van onto the road.
Netcompany INEOS delayed announcing their Vuelta a Espana lineup until Tarling made his decision regarding participation. The team confirmed their full support for his choice to race.
Josh's parents, Michael and Dawn, have expressed their full backing, stating their son will race in honor of his brother. In a statement shared on Instagram, they wrote, "He has chosen to do so in honour of his brother Fin, with the full support of his family, surrounded by a team who have been incredibly supportive of whatever decision he made." They added that Finlay was immensely proud of his brother and would have loved watching him compete, making it fitting for Josh to honor that bond.
The parents have also authorized a GoFundMe page in Finlay's memory, with the aim of supporting young Welsh riders. The page has reportedly garnered over £70,000 in donations.
