Brian Kelly, recently fired from his position as head coach at LSU, has landed a broadcasting role with CBS. He is set to join a three-man team calling Mountain West Conference football games for the 2026-27 season.
In addition to his play-calling duties, Kelly will also be a regular analyst on the weekday program “Inside College Football” on the CBS Sports Network (CBSSN). The 64-year-old coach previously contributed to CBS's studio coverage for the NFL Draft.
Kelly's tenure at LSU concluded midway through the 2025 season following a 5-3 start that saw the team drop out of the top 25 rankings. During his four seasons with the Tigers, he compiled a record of 34-14, achieving two seasons with 10 or more wins. The university paid Kelly a $54 million buyout following the split.
Kelly has 22 seasons of coaching experience, having previously coached at Central Michigan and Notre Dame. He is recognized as the all-time winningest coach at Notre Dame, leading the Fighting Irish to the College Football Playoffs twice.
In April, Kelly expressed his desire to continue coaching, stating his motivation was to mentor young athletes and build successful programs. He noted that despite the significant financial aspects of modern college football, players still require guidance and development. The recent coaching cycle saw an unusually high number of openings, with 32 FBS jobs becoming available, 17 of which were at Power Four programs.
Kelly's move to broadcasting follows a path similar to that of Dan Mullen, who transitioned to an analyst role with ESPN and ABC after his dismissal from Florida before accepting the head coaching position at UNLV.
