Brewers Secure First World Series Game in 44 Years After Chaotic Ninth Inning
Milwaukee overcomes a controversial replay and premature celebrations to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1.
The Milwaukee Brewers have won a World Series game for the first time since 1982, securing a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the Fall Classic. The win was marked by a dramatic and chaotic ninth inning that included a disputed replay and early celebrations from the Brewers.
The Brewers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI triple by Christian Yelich and a subsequent single by William Contreras. However, that would be their last scoring until the seventh inning.
Milwaukee's pitching staff largely contained the Rays. Jacob Misiorowski, a projected Cy Young Award winner, held Tampa Bay to one run over five innings, though the Rays made multiple baserunning errors, including two runners caught stealing and another doubled off. The Brewers also had their own baserunning mishap when David Hamilton was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple.
Milwaukee added an insurance run in the seventh inning when Jackson Chourio drove in a runner with an opposite-field ground ball single, a tactic that proved successful for the Brewers throughout the regular season. This brought the score to 3-1.
The ninth inning saw the Rays load the bases with one out, narrowing the deficit to 3-2 after a play that was initially ruled a game-ending double play. However, a replay review showed that the shortstop had come off the second base bag, keeping the inning alive with the score now 3-2, runners on second and third with two outs.
At this point, the Brewers' dugout began its premature celebrations, igniting fireworks and creating a fog-filled scene on the field. Rays batter Johnny DeLuca then came to the plate and struck out to end the game, concluding the unusual sequence of events.
The Brewers will look to extend their lead in Game 2, with Logan Henderson scheduled to pitch for Milwaukee. The Rays are set to counter with Drew Rasmussen.
