Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Credits 'Gamers' After Historic NLCS Sweep of Dodgers
Milwaukee clinches first World Series berth in 44 years, defying expectations with a dominant performance.
The Milwaukee Brewers have advanced to their first World Series in 44 years after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. Manager Pat Murphy lauded his team's resilience and determination following the decisive victory.
"They may have a bunch of Hall of Famers, but we have a bunch of gamers. And the gamers won this week," Murphy stated after the Brewers secured their spot in the championship series. He emphasized the team's hunger and commitment to giving their best effort, regardless of the opponent's star power.
The Brewers' payroll, reported as $146 million, is significantly less than the Dodgers' $339 million payroll, which ranks second in baseball. Despite the financial disparity and the Dodgers' roster filled with highly decorated players, Milwaukee managed to overcome the odds.
This victory marks a significant turnaround from the previous season when the Dodgers swept the Brewers in the NLCS. Murphy noted a distinct shift in his team's mindset this year. "I think the Dodgers figured out that we came in here with a little different attitude this year," he said.
The Brewers' success was fueled by a collective effort, highlighted by players like NLCS MVP Jake Bauers. Bauers, who considered retiring from baseball two seasons ago, has become a crucial part of Milwaukee's lineup, delivering key at-bats against prominent pitchers. Even after falling behind early in the clinching game, the team remained confident, with Bauers stating, "There was never a doubt in that dugout what was going to happen tonight. We knew we were going to win that game."
Relief pitcher Aaron Ashby played a key role in the final game, closing out the victory by stranding multiple baserunners. He described the team's mentality as playing "with that chip on our shoulder" and highlighted their ability to survive and return stronger this season.
The Brewers will face either the Cleveland Guardians or the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series. The Guardians currently hold a 2-1 lead in their respective ALCS series.
