Brewers Edge Rays in Tense World Series Game 1
Milwaukee holds on for a 3-2 victory after a ninth-inning rally by Tampa Bay is thwarted.
The Milwaukee Brewers secured a narrow 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night, with pitcher Trevor Megill closing out the win by striking out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third.
The decisive moment came after a replay review overturned what appeared to be a game-ending double play. The review determined that Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt’s foot was slightly off the base when he received the throw from second baseman Brice Turang.
Rookie Jacob Misiorowski earned the win, allowing one run over five innings. The Brewers established an early lead in the first inning when Christian Yelich hit an RBI triple, igniting a two-run rally that propelled Milwaukee to its first World Series game since 1982.
Jackson Chourio and William Contreras each recorded two hits for the Brewers. Contreras also played a key role defensively, throwing out two potential base stealers.
The game marked the first World Series matchup between two teams seeking their first championship since 1980. Historically, the winner of Game 1 has gone on to win the World Series 62.8% of the time. The series continues with Game 2 on Saturday.
