Brewers Edge Padres in NLDS Game 1 After Bizarre Roof Play
William Contreras' go-ahead homer and a controversial roof-bounce catch secure Milwaukee's victory.
The Milwaukee Brewers secured a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of their National League Division Series, a game marked by a pivotal home run and a peculiar play involving the stadium roof.
Milwaukee, the regular season's best team, faced a Padres squad that finished strong to make the postseason. The anticipated series opener at American Family Field saw a tight contest from the start. The Padres opened the scoring in the second inning with two runs, but the Brewers quickly responded. Jackson Chourio tied the game in the third with a two-run home run, the hardest-hit of his career.
Both teams' bullpens saw action early. Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski exited after four innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six. The game remained tied through six innings.
In the seventh inning, Brewers catcher William Contreras broke the tie with a solo home run to right-center field, his second hit against San Diego pitching all season.
The ninth inning delivered the game's most unusual moment. With two outs and a runner on first, Padres first baseman Ty France appeared to hit a go-ahead, two-run home run. However, the ball struck a truss in the stadium's roof. The ball ricocheted nearly straight down into the field of play, where outfielder Jackson Chourio caught it. According to MLB rules, if a batted ball hits the roof in fair territory, it remains live. The Padres challenged the play, but the call stood, preserving the lead.
Jackson Merrill lined out to right field to end the game, giving the Brewers a 1-0 series lead.
Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee.
