Brett Baty's left knee appears to have escaped serious injury, with an MRI on Thursday revealing no structural damage. The utilityman was not in the New York Mets' starting lineup for Friday's Subway Series opener against the Yankees but was available to enter the game if needed, according to interim manager Andy Green.
Baty left Wednesday's game due to discomfort in his left knee after running to first base. He did not play in the Mets' 6-4 loss to the Yankees on Sept. 11, 2026. Green noted that Baty would have been held out of Friday's starting lineup regardless due to the Yankees starting left-hander Carlos Rodón.
Green commented on the significance of the Mets and Yankees playing on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, recalling the impact of Mike Piazza's home run following the attacks. Green, who was a player in Class-A on Sept. 11, 2001, reflected on how the events of that day made his own baseball pursuits feel insignificant in comparison.
In a separate note, Nate Lavender's scoreless streak to begin his major league career, which spanned 14 innings, was broken on Wednesday when he allowed three earned runs in the ninth inning against the Marlins. Green expressed satisfaction with the streak's conclusion, stating, "I’m glad he gave up a run this year." He further remarked that streaks of that nature do not typically continue indefinitely at the major league level.
Of the 176 players who have played for both the Mets and Yankees, five are currently on the rosters of either team: Juan Soto, Devin Williams, Paul Blackburn, Amed Rosario, and Ali Sanchez.
