Matthew Brennan, a rider for Visma Lease-a-bike, celebrated his fourth stage win in the 2026 Vuelta a Espana after a sprint finish in Palos de la Frontera. The 21-year-old British cyclist held up four fingers to commemorate each of his victories in his debut Grand Tour. "It's unbelievable, four victories here and the plan was for one," Brennan stated after the 181km stage.
The 16th stage was anticipated to be another opportunity for sprinters. A five-rider breakaway established an early lead, but the peloton began to close the gap with 100 kilometers remaining. The breakaway was caught with approximately 23 kilometers left, paving the way for the sprint finish.
In the general classification, Spanish rider Enric Mas of Team Movistar maintains his lead of 2 minutes and 6 seconds over Felix Gall. Primoz Roglic is positioned a further four seconds behind Gall. The upcoming stage will cover 185 kilometers from Dos Hermanas to Seville, presenting another course suited for sprinters.
