Brendon McCullum has been sacked as England's Test head coach, concluding a four-year tenure that began with a period of significant success but ended amidst controversy and underperformance.

McCullum initially took charge of the Test team in 2022, aiming to revitalize a squad that had won only one of its previous 17 matches. Under his leadership, in partnership with captain Ben Stokes, England adopted a dynamic batting style often referred to as 'Bazball.' This approach yielded immediate results, with England winning 10 of their first 11 Tests. Notable victories during this initial phase included series wins against New Zealand, India, and Pakistan.

However, the team's performance subsequently became more inconsistent. Since that early success, England have lost 19 and won 17 of 38 Tests. A challenging period included a one-run defeat against New Zealand in Wellington and a 4-1 series loss in India in 2024, despite an initial win in Hyderabad. The 2023 home Ashes series ended in a 2-2 draw, with England narrowly missing an opportunity to regain the urn.

Ashes Tour and Off-Field Issues

The tour of Australia for the 2025-26 Ashes proved particularly difficult. Despite plans to confront Australia with a potent pace attack, the tour was marred by inadequate preparation, poor performances, and allegations of a drinking culture among players. Following a strong position in the first Test in Perth, England suffered an astonishing collapse and was defeated before the day concluded, failing to recover for the remainder of the series. Although England secured a victory in the fourth Test in Melbourne, their first in Australia in 14 years, their overall performance was described as abject. Off-field incidents, including public drinking in Noosa and an altercation involving Harry Brook with a nightclub bouncer in Wellington, further contributed to the tour's negative atmosphere. McCullum and Stokes attempted to distance themselves from rumors of a rift within the team following these events.

Coaching Role and Future

McCullum had combined the Test and white-ball coaching roles in 2024. His contract with the white-ball team is set to continue until the end of the 50-over World Cup scheduled for autumn next year in southern Africa. England now faces the task of appointing a new head coach for the Test team who can work effectively with McCullum's established approach. The departure leaves England without a Test head coach and captain, though Ben Stokes remains captain.
