Bow Echo cemented its status as a top-tier racehorse by winning the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes, completing a significant trilogy of victories. This win marks the horse's third consecutive Group 1 triumph, following earlier successes in the Betfred 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. This rare feat has not been achieved by a horse since Frankel in 2011 and only by six horses since Brigadier Gerard in 1971.
In a closely contested race, trainer George Boughey's colt, ridden by jockey Billy Loughnane, had to overcome a challenging mid-race position. The horse was momentarily held up by traffic when Ryan Moore aboard Gstaad moved up, trapping Bow Echo in a pocket near the two-furlong marker. Loughnane eventually extricated his mount, finding Bow Echo with three lengths to make up. The horse responded with its characteristic acceleration to overtake rivals and secure a half-length victory.
"Bow Echo is an extraordinarily talented horse, a complete racehorse," said a relieved Boughey after the race. He noted that the horse had been in "a couple of scraps recently" but demonstrated resilience and a potent turn of foot to achieve a career-best performance. Boughey acknowledged the significance of emulating Frankel, stating that he may "will probably never be in this position again" and expressed gratitude to the Maktoum family for their support.
Plans for Bow Echo's future include potential races in France, such as the Prix Jacques le Marois or the Prix du Moulin, with a long-term aim of competing in the Breeders' Cup. Loughnane, who completed a double on the day, expressed pride in the horse, calling it a "superstar" and acknowledging his own good fortune to be associated with such a talented animal at a young age. He detailed how he had to time his challenge late in the race, confident in his ability to catch the leaders from the furlong pole onwards.
Loughnane, 19, also rode French Affair to victory in the six-furlong sprint for trainer Jenny Candlish, marking a successful day for the young jockey who is competing for his first Champion Jockey title.
