Boulter Ousted in Wuhan Open First Round
British number one Katie Boulter fell to a straight-sets defeat against Russia's Diana Shnaider in the opening round of the Wuhan Open.
British number one Katie Boulter has been eliminated from the Wuhan Open after losing to Diana Shnaider of Russia in the first round. Shnaider, ranked world number 13, secured a convincing victory with a score of 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 30 minutes.
After a closely contested first set, Shnaider broke Boulter's serve four times in the second set to seal the win. Boulter, currently ranked 54th in the world, has experienced a largely disappointing season. She has managed only two wins across the four Grand Slam tournaments this year. Since her first-round exit at Wimbledon in June, Boulter has won just three of her nine singles matches on the WTA Tour.
The defeat comes at a difficult time for Boulter, whose grandfather, Brian, passed away last week. Her brother, James, described Brian as "Katie's biggest supporter." Boulter herself posted a tribute on social media prior to the tournament, stating she had endured "a tough week."
