Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly in discussions to sell their stakes in Chelsea Football Club to the club's majority owners, Clearlake Capital. The ongoing talks could value the London-based club at approximately £5 billion, though the finalization of any deal remains uncertain.
Discussions between the two American investment groups have occurred intermittently over the past two years. These conversations are understood to stem from strategic differences that have emerged since they jointly acquired Chelsea in a forced sale from Roman Abramovich in 2022 for £2.5 billion, along with a commitment of an additional £1.75 billion in investment. Clearlake Capital currently holds a 61.5 percent ownership stake and shares joint control with Boehly. However, Boehly's role as chairman is set to transition to Clearlake next May, marking the end of his five-year term.
Boehly serves as a co-controlling owner alongside Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, who manage the Clearlake investment. All significant decisions require approval from this group. The remaining 38.5 percent of the club's ownership is divided among Boehly, Walter, and Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss.
Insiders at Chelsea have consistently refuted claims of discord between Eghbali and Boehly, asserting a professional and constructive working relationship. Nevertheless, recent developments suggest a potential shift.
Earlier in August, Mark Walter divested his stake in the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, a sale that occurred just 14 months after its acquisition. Reports from The Wall Street Journal indicate that the U.S. Attorney's Office and the Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating Walter in connection with allegations concerning his business empire.
