Bills Defensive Coordinator Jim Leonhard Demands Improvement
First-year coordinator expresses frustration with the defense's inconsistency and reliance on the offense.

Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard is expressing frustration with his unit's inconsistent performance five weeks into the NFL season. Leonhard stated that it is "time to be good at something" and that the defense cannot continue to rely on quarterback Josh Allen to bail them out, as happened in the Bills' 37-34 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams.
Leonhard addressed reporters Tuesday, acknowledging the defense's struggles with giving up points, yards, and failing to stop opponents on fourth down. "It’s too inconsistent to pretend that we’re building and working and making improvements. Everything’s being evaluated," Leonhard said. He maintained confidence in his players but cautioned that roster changes could be considered if improvements are not made.
The Bills' defense allowed 33 first downs against the Rams, matching a high mark since 1991. They have allowed 20 or more first downs in all five games this season. The secondary has experienced coverage and communication issues, contributing to allowing 250 or more passing yards in four games already. Fourth-down efficiency is also a concern, with opponents converting 8 of 9 attempts against Buffalo. The defense is also on the field for a high number of snaps, ranking second in the NFL with 350.
Leonhard, who took over the defense this season, anticipated more from a unit transitioning to a 3-4 system and incorporating new starters. Injuries, particularly in the secondary, have played a role. The cornerback position opposite Christian Benford has been unsettled, with second-year player Maxwell Hairston being replaced by rookie Davison Igbinosun in the most recent game.
Leonhard noted that players sometimes try too hard, attempting to do too much rather than simplifying their approach. "There’s a fine line of trying harder and trying smarter," he said. "Sometimes, it’s just relax, take a step back and simplify. Slow down."
The Bills, now 4-1, are preparing to face the Las Vegas Raiders (3-2) on Sunday.
