Big Damo Explains MLW Signing, Contra Unit Membership, and Opera Cup Ambitions
The powerhouse wrestler cites MLW's patience during his injury recovery as a key factor in his decision and expresses his desire to compete for the historic Opera Cup.
Pro wrestling star Big Damo has detailed his decision to join Major League Wrestling (MLW), his alignment with the faction Contra Unit, and his aspirations for the upcoming Opera Cup tournament. Damo, a former WWE competitor, joined MLW earlier this year and quickly became a member of the villainous Contra Unit.
Damo revealed in an interview with OutKick Dropkick that MLW's understanding during a recent injury recovery period was a primary reason for his loyalty to the promotion. "Honestly, the major reason was I was struggling with a minor injury and MLW were really, really patient with me and they waited until I recovered and came back to me," Damo stated. He noted that the company's willingness to wait for his return, rather than moving on, was a rare and appreciated gesture in the wrestling industry.
He also pointed to the caliber of talent and global partnerships MLW has cultivated as additional draws. The promotion's roster includes many familiar faces, and its alliances with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling provide opportunities for international talent. "Also, what really drew me to MLW is, there's an incredible roster there. A lot of colleagues, a lot of people I've wrestled before and a lot of people who I really like and really respect," Damo said.
MLW's distribution deals, which bring its weekly show "Fusion" to platforms like Tubi and Veeps, were also cited as a factor. Damo is now part of Contra Unit, a group he described as the "most evil faction in MLW." Alongside members like Brick Savage, Kushida, and Josef Samael, Damo believes the unit is currently in a strong position. "Well, at this point with myself and Brick Savage, I think we could probably run through a brick wall," he remarked. "So, it probably is the best time to say we're probably the most feared we've been in a long time."
While his teammate Brick Savage is focused on championships, Damo's immediate goal is to win the Opera Cup. The Opera Cup is a historic single-elimination tournament revived by MLW, with its origins dating back to the late 1800s. Damo is set to face Wolf Gang in an upcoming "Fusion" episode, with a potential match against Matt Riddle in the following round. "Always eyeing gold," Damo said. "You know, with this Opera Cup, that'll be the first step. I'm wrestling Wolf Gang this Thursday on Tubi. And then I'm looking at the likes of Matt Riddle. I'm looking at the likes of Killer Kross." He expressed a desire to make history as the first Irish winner of the prestigious tournament.
