Former Sky Sports reporter Bianca Westwood has stated she does not anticipate returning to work in football, marking a significant career shift after 22 years with the broadcaster. Westwood, 51, accepted a redundancy offer from Sky Sports in 2023, a decision she made around the same time longtime Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling departed.
Westwood, who was the first female reporter on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, shared her perspective in a recent TikTok video, addressing ongoing inquiries from followers about a potential return to football coverage. "I'm not going back to Sky and I'm probably never going to work in football again," she stated. She explained that in the years leading up to her departure, she sensed diminishing opportunities within football reporting and that the broadcaster "didn't really rate me." This led her to develop content in fashion, beauty, and skincare, areas she identified as personal interests and geared towards a female audience.
She elaborated on the reasons behind her decision, noting that while she would have considered another football role if one had been offered three years ago, "there weren't any opportunities offered to me and if I'm honest my heart wasn't really in it anymore." Westwood described a significant change in the accessibility and nature of football reporting compared to when she began. She recalled a time when reporters had extensive access to players for interviews in various settings, contrasting it with the current format of brief, crowded press conferences.
"When I first started reporting, you could go out, take players to different locations for interviews, go golfing or sailing or clay pigeon shooting, paintballing, you name it, I've done it," Westwood said. "But now you literally get shoved into a room, especially in the Premier League, with a light, there's probably about 10 other broadcasters globally who are either going before you or waiting for you to finish."
She also commented on the shift in her personal engagement with the sport, noting that she has watched less football since leaving Sky, including her own team, West Ham. "All my content now is going to be about fashion, skincare, women, menopause, grief now I've got that experience recently losing my mum. But football is done... unless a really, really good exciting, challenging job came up but I'm not holding my breath," Westwood concluded.
