Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, a seasoned player for the New York Liberty, has spoken out about the challenges of her inconsistent role this season, admitting that the situation has been "difficult" and "frustrating." As the WNBA trade deadline looms on August 2, questions about her future with the team have surfaced.
Laney-Hamilton, who missed all of last season due to knee surgery rehabilitation, stated that she feels physically stronger than she has in a long time. Despite this, her playing time has varied, including periods of coming off the bench and missing games even when available. This shift has impacted her as a competitor who has dedicated significant time to the organization.
"Just as a competitor and everything, as somebody who’s worked really hard, somebody who’s been a part of the organization for a long time, it’s … it can sometimes be disappointing and frustrating," Laney-Hamilton said on Tuesday. "But that’s also part of the process. So like I said, I’m just trying to — as much as possible — just come out, be the best version of myself within the circumstances."
Coach Chris DeMarco has cited a tightening of the rotation as a reason for some of Laney-Hamilton's recent absences from the lineup. He has maintained confidence in her value to the team, stating, "She is valuable to us. We have had a lot of communication, and she’ll be ready to go [Tuesday]."
Laney-Hamilton confirmed that she has had multiple discussions with DeMarco and General Manager Jonathan Kolb regarding her situation. "We’ve had a lot of different conversations," she said, "and so now just trying to figure everything out and work through things."
When asked directly if she expected to remain with the Liberty beyond the August 2 trade deadline, Laney-Hamilton paused. "We’re working on things," she responded. "I don’t know what everything looks like right now. I’m just trying to take everything one step at a time and just stay in the moment. It’s been difficult. But today, right now, I feel pretty good. I just want to be able to focus on the game, go out there, do what I do at least for the fans, for the teammates, all the things."
Fans have shown significant support for Laney-Hamilton, a player described as a "beloved franchise cornerstone." During a recent game on Friday, "We want Laney" chants echoed through Barclays Center, even as she remained on the bench. Laney-Hamilton acknowledged the impact of this fan support, saying it means "a lot" to her. "It’s also a little overwhelming with the situation and everything and emotions and all the things," she added. "But it’s something that I don’t take for granted, something that I do really appreciate to just know that the fans continue to have my back through a difficult time."
