Bengals' Jordan Battle Intercepts Dolphins' Malik Willis Twice After Publicly Revealing Defensive Plan
Safety Jordan Battle made two crucial interceptions against quarterback Malik Willis, fulfilling his pre-game prediction.
Cincinnati Bengals safety Jordan Battle intercepted Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis twice on Sunday, a performance that followed his public comments earlier in the week detailing a specific tell he observed in Willis's throwing motion. The Bengals secured a 31-24 victory, snapping a two-game losing streak.
Battle had stated on Thursday that he noticed Willis had a "slight little tap" of the ball before each throw, which he believed could be a key for the Bengals' defense to anticipate plays. Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley had dismissed the observation on Friday, calling it a common practice for quarterbacks.
Despite Hafley's comments, Battle's analysis appeared to pay off during the game. He made his first interception on back-to-back drives in the second quarter, picking off Willis after the quarterback's arm was hit during a throw. On the subsequent drive, Battle intercepted a pass intended for receiver Kevin Coleman Jr.
Willis, who signed a three-year, $67.5 million contract this offseason, contested Battle's assessment after the game. He stated that the interceptions were not a result of the described "tell" but rather tipped balls and a scramble-drill miscommunication. "I don´t think I patted either one of those. I don´t think those are correlated," Willis said.
Willis had an inconsistent outing, completing 15 of 27 passes for 137 yards, with one touchdown pass and one rushing touchdown. He also lost a fumble in the fourth quarter. The Dolphins quarterback started the game 0-for-4 passing and managed only five completions in the first half.
Battle also contributed seven tackles and two pass breakups for the Bengals defense. The South Florida native dedicated his interceptions to his parents, who regularly attend his games. "I have to think back to who got me here. A great supporting cast. They come to almost every game. I thank them for that," Battle said.
